Senators were finally able to finish debate on Bill 125 this afternoon
after more than two days of debate. Democrat Senator Tina Muna-Barnes
is the sponsor of the legislation that would lease the Paseo Stadium to
the Guam Baseball Federation for 50 years.
She says the bill has a lot of other provisions that will help grow baseball
on Guam. “From clinics to just be able to uplift the sport of baseball
it will create jobs, it’s a landmark legislation for true public-private
partnership...it will bring and enhance sports tourism,” she told
KUAM News.
Republicans however, had questions about the lease and how tax credits
would be administered.
Senator Bob Klitzkie in particular offered up numerous amendments to the
bill. He said, “I think it is a benign bill and I think it has worthy
purpose. Whenever you deal with taxes and tax credits however, it is a
very technical undertaking and I think it requires great attention from
this body to make sure we do it correctly.” Senator Klitzkie says
if he doesn't vote in favor of the bill it will be because one of his
amendments failed.
The amendment would have left it up to the Camacho Administration to solicit
bids for the lease of the Paseo Stadium.
