And finally a measure has been introduced that would create a tax rebate
of $500 for those teachers using their money to purchase school supplies.
Senator Bob Klitzkie authored Bill 222, dubbed the Educator Appreciation
Act of 2003. The measure would allow educators to claim a tax rebate to
recover up to $500 of personal expenditures over and above the $250 deduction
allowed by the Internal Revenue Code. Additionally the bill extends the
functional equivalent of the Qualifying Certificate, in this case the
Educators Qualifying Certificate, and tax rebate on a smaller scale to
the island’s teachers.
